How it works

If you want to train with us it’s easy – and there are two options.

Option one: turn up 10 minutes before class, pay your money and take part. This is great if you only want to train once or twice a week and want to pay as you go.

However, if you’re planning on training more than twice a week we have a much more cost effective route for you:

Option two: For £50 per month you can secure yourself a membership. This means you can train every day in one of our Thai of Boxing based classes, have access to all the strength and conditioning equipment , bags etc whenever the gym is open and receive a discount on the other timetabled classes.

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)

£6 per session or free to members

At its core Legions is a Thai Boxing gym. Muay Thai is a devastating striking art that blends techniques such as kicks, knees, elbows, punches and clinch work. Muay Thai (or Thai Boxing) is a fighting art that originated in Thailand over 1000 years ago. Often called the “toughest ring sport in the world” it is arguably the most powerful and dominating stand-up martial art in the world.

A good Muay Thai session is one of the best workouts a person can have and is perfect for fitness and weight loss as well as increasing confidence, physical ability and skill. All you need to bring in the first instance is a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, all gloves and equipment is available at the gym.

Advanced classes are taught by our head coach Dave “the boss man” Phillips and generally consist of a warm up, some pads or technical training followed by sparring.

Beginners classes are taken by two of our top fighters – Ian Houillebecq and Danny Harrison- Little these classes are great if you’ve not trained in Muay Thai before, need a refresher or are looking for a class that’s not quite as intense – you work at your own pace.

MMA – Mixed Martial Arts

£6 or £3 to Legions members

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling  techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports and martial arts. These styles include Boxing, Thai Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, Karate and just about any other martial art you can think of.

A Legions MMA class will always start with a 10-15 minute warm up to try limit any injuries. The warm up consists of active drills of basic techniques to slowly easy your body into work mode.

The next 45 minutes will focus on techniques and drilling those techniques. For a grappling MMA class these will be submissions and defences.

Submissions include a wide variety of joint locks and chokes designed to force your opponent to ‘tap out’ and verbally submit. All submissions are practiced under close supervision by the instructor in a safe environment so any injuries are very rare.

Another part of the technique section would cover the defense to all the submissions listed above. There are always many ways out of every submission and it is just as important to know how to escape them as it is to know how to apply them.

We end every class with a bit of sparring so you get to apply the techniques you have learnt to a live person who is trying to defend and counter. This is optional and anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable enough to take part in the sparring is more than welcome to keep practicing their techniques at this point.

MMA is a great workout for the entire body, it is physically demanding and helps generate high fitness levels that are rarely matched by any other sport. It is also excellent for self-confidence and self-defence as the techniques learnt in class are easily adapted to real life situations.

Legions Kids Program

Mini Legions is our kids programme for 5 to 15 year olds.

On a Tuesday night we have our Thai focused classes, Thursday nights have a kickboxing base, both are complimentary so there is absolutely no reason not to do both.

Research shows that martial arts help teach self-discipline and socialisation skills along with inspiring kids to be active and respectful to others.

All of our instructors have full CRB checks and teach classes in a respectful and structured manor. Parents are more than welcome to stay and watch, in fact we run a women’s only class at the same time on a Thursday so you could even join in!

For further information about our kids classes please feel free to contact the gym via email or phone.
