Dave Phillips – The Boss
Dave started boxing when he was 24, training under Gary Kelly where he practiced for 2 years until he found Thai boxing to which he has dedicated himself to ever since. It was through Muay Thai that he met business partner Al and after training together for several years they decided to open Legions Gym in January 2011. Originally based out of a converted class room, the gym went from strength to strength and continues to do so to this day.
Dave has trained and fought for well over 12 years under Thai rules – he is now retired but there is always the threat of him making it back into the ring.
As head coach he heads up the fight team working the guys hard on the pads and in sparring. Legions fighters are renowned for their aggressive style and technical proficiency which stems from Dave’s own fighting style. Dave has taken complete novices and turned them into World Champions.
Dave teaches the advanced Thai classes at the gym and is available for 1-2-1 training.
Al Chambers – The Quiet One
Al used to be a librarian – true story!
Aged 17, like Dave he started his training in the world of boxing, before making the move to muay thai. He has 9 fights to date with 9 fights in Thai Boxing, K1 and boxing.
Al is in charge of the strength and conditioning for the fighters and members. The Legions style of fighting requires the guys to be extremely fit and conditioned and Al uses the most up to date training methods to make sure the team are ready to fight.
He is hugely passionate about the gym, and its members and work extremely hard to make sure they have the best chance of succeeding whatever their goals.
Al teaches a range of classes at the gym and is available for 1-2-1 training.

Julie (Jules) took up kickboxing 15 years ago training under John Atkin at the Advanced Fighting Centre in Newcastle, grading to 2nd dan black belt in 2010 and has over 10 years teaching experience behind her.
She trains hard! And pretty much lives at the gym training under Al and Dave but when she’s not hitting stuff you’ll find her either eating peanut related products or at English Heritage where she heads up the marketing department for the North of England.
Julie is a highly experienced coach, teaches the kickboxing and Yoga classes at the gym and is available for 1-2-1’s and small group sessions.

Danny is 25 and an active Legions Gym Muay Thai fighter – he is also a top notch coach. You will see him teaching the beginners classes as well as doing 1-1 sessions on a daily basis for Muay Thai and fitness for men and women of all levels.
He first started Thai boxing training at 7 years old but it wasn’t until he was 21 in 2011 when he had his first professional fight. Since then he’s been very busy indeed grabbing the ICO European title 2015. He regularly takes his training over to Thailand for a few months each year to gain experience and learn as much as he can from the home of Muay Thai. He’s fought on some of the biggest promotions in the world in the UK, Thailand, Australia and Brazil and is hoping to carry on doing so and eventually be able to call himself Danny champion of the world!
Danny teaches the beginners Thai classes at the gym and is available for 1-2-1 training.

Ian is one of Legions Gym top fighters having trained under Dave Phillips since day one.
Ian has in excess of over 25 fights along the way capturing WBC National title, WRSA commonwealth title and is ranked in the UK top 10.
He was the first person to fight for Legions Gym in 2011 and continues to fight to this day.
Ian is available for 1-2-1’s at the gym.
Originally from a boxing background, Lewis starting out training from a young age. His first taste of Kickboxing came under the instruction of Paul Lynch at the age of 12, Lewis left the sport after a brief spell returning at the age of 19 under the instruction of Tony Diaz, 8 x world Champion, In 2011 after a year back in training Lewis was invited to be part of UMAC fighting Team winning a verity of British titles and National Opens Between 2011 and 2013, In 2013 after winning the ISKA British Championships Lewis was invited to be a part of the ISKA England Team and chosen to represent England in the 2013 World Championships held in Northern Cyprus, this was a 5 day event in which a world title was achieved as well and Silver medal in a separate category. Pushing on from the World Title win Lewis went on to win several more titles included British Titles / National Titles / and Super league belts hosted by the WMO – Gforce between 2013 – 2015, pushing on from that Lewis represented England in 2014 at the WKC world Championships held in Portugal and secured a top 3 place on the podium, in 2015 Lewis made the transition to K1 under the instruction of Dave Phillips and Al chambers, he has since several fights under Legions and has represented the WMO England K1 team at the 2015 world championships narrowly losing out to France in the final, Lewis is still an active member of the Legions team and looks forward to new challenges moving forward.

Meet Connor – Connor likes countdown, maths in general, grime music, has an English Bull Terrier called Leon and LOVES apple crumble.
He teaches our strength and conditioning classes and is also available for 1-2-1’s and small group sessions. Connor works with a range of people from elite sports people looking to fine tune their performance, athletes looking to get to the next level, anything and everything about the functional fitness scene or people who just want to get a little bit better fitter in general. Basically, unless you’re looking to punch or kick something/someone then he’s the man for you.
He’s a highly qualified coach having graduated with a 1st in Sports Science from York St John University specialising in performance sport. In addition to his degree he holds specialist qualifications in further strength and conditioning, body weight movement and nutrition as well as being a BWL L1 certified coach and a Crossfit L1 certified trainer.
He doesn’t just tell people what to do; occasionally he’ll pull his finger out and practice what he preaches. His sporting background has always been in team sports playing rugby and football like any young lad and enjoyed some success. However since deciding he was either too old (he’s 22) or (more likely) too fragile for running round on a muddy field in winter he’s decided to dabble in Crossfit (a nice in door sport), where he’s seen his biggest achievement – qualifying for the British Championships. (As Crossfit is designed to test your overall fitness levels and he was 61st in the country – he’s now claiming to be the 61st fittest man in the county!!!).

Ash has been a personal trainer for 4 years and a boxing coach for over 6.
He started boxing at the tender age of 11 and never looked back. He boxed competitively throughout England until he took up coaching at 19. As a coach he’s worked with numerous champions and tuned many beginners into skilled fighters.
Not all his coaching revolves around boxing though. Ash works with clients of all different fitness levels to help them achieve their goals. His clients range from total gym novices who are looking for a base to start from, to professional athletes looking for bespoke tailored programming.
Ash runs our morning circuit and boxing classes and is available for personal training.

This is Wes, he teaches the MMA classes and is a professional fighter and coach. He’s been training for over 8 years in various styles including Thai Boxing, K1, boxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, no gi jiu jitsu, judo and hybrid submission wrestling. His main disciplines are Thai Boxing and Jiu Jitsu as he believes these two devastating martial arts lead to the most well-rounded, versatile and successful fighter. He’s trained in Thai Boxing under our head coach Dave Phillips since day one and has had various jiu jitsu/MMA coaches over the years before finally settling with UFC veteran and UK MMA legend Danny Mitchell and his mighty team at Asylum Vale Tudo (AVT).
Wes practices what he preaches having competed in over 30 fights/competitions, 17 of which were MMA and winning the vast majority. He’s won 6 British titles and represented Great Britain in the world championships in Brazil in 2013.
Having coached people from day one all the way to their first fight or competing at the world championships, he’s a firm believer that every fighter is an individual and strives to provide unique personalised training to everyone even in classes or small groups. As a coach he believes it is his job to coach and develop YOUR style and skills. All he asks is that you work hard, try your best and bring a positive attitude to class.

If you know Muay Thai you’ll know this name. Things you may not know are that he loves dogs (owns a giant German Shepard called Floyd), can “sandwich” like no other and dances like MJ. Liam is one of the most successful fighters in the world having faced the likes of Seanchai Sor Kingstar and Anuwat Kaewsmrit. He is four times world champion in both kickboxing and Muay Thai which includes holding the prestigious W.M.C. belt. He teaches out of our gym every other Saturday.

Quite simply James is one of the most talented fighters to come out of the UK having fought and beaten some of the top names in Muay Thai. These days he is one of the best stand up coaches in the UK and teaches 1-2-1’s at the gym every other Saturday.
He held the WRSA world championship and was rated the second most technical fighter in the UK.
